We then installed our ladder in our square hole opening to be able to enter the loft. Attach the upper side rails on the side opposite where you choose to put the ladder, in my example this would be the left side. The top of the ladder rails will be at a 75°angle and the bottom of the rails will be a 15°angle where the boards will rest on the ground.

Attach the rungs at approximately 8″ apart (this will depend on the age of your kiddo, the smaller and younger. Cut the ladder pieces to size. Or, put more simple, figure out what angle you'll need to make the notch which fits onto the lip of the loft.

I have printed the plans together with a description of the process in easy to follow steps and a list of the materials required. Build the components from 2×4 lumber, suing our free plans. Start with one of the 8' sections of 2x6 and lean it up agains the loft from the floor.

The best way is by using a fitted, extendable ladder which folds back and can be safely stored out of the way. We then installed a clothing wardrobe free standing closet under the loft. Attach the ladder to the loft bed with 3” wood screws, from the back of the leg supports and into the ladder.

Next, you’ll have to assemble the pieces and build the actual ladder, so put the two 1x2x8 cedar boards side by side at sixteen inches apart and make sure they’re parallel, i.e the tops and bottoms line up.
